Beauty is a necessity even pregnant woman can look beautiful with help of skincare and makeup. But, pregnant women should choose wisely all beauty products and skincare which can interfere with baby’s system development. Here are beauty products and skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

1. Retinoid
This family of compounds derived from vitamin A most used in anti-aging products which may reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Unfortunately, pregnant women cannot deal with this retinoid to pose any risk to a developing baby. As reported HaiBunda, retinoid should be avoided including retinol, retinoic acid, retinyl palmitate, retinyl linoleate, differin, adaplene, tretinoin and isotretinone.

2. Parabens
Parabens widely used as artificial preservatives in beauty and skincare products to prevent and reduce growth of harmful bacteria and mould as well as increasing the shelf life of the products. But, the use of paraben-containing beauty and skincare products during pregnancy need greater attention. Parabens might be associated with breast cancer and allergy development. Hence, it is highly recommended to not use parabens—propylparaben, methylparaben, and butylparaben—containing beauty and skincare products during pregnancy and nursing.

3. Salicylic Acid
Salicylic Acid is known for its exfoliating and bacteria-fighting powers. Salicylic Acid is quite common in skincare products such as face wash, toner, peeling, serum and moisturizer. According to American College for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG), pregnant women should always contact their professional health care before using products containing salicylic acid, azelaic acid, glycolic acid and benzoyl acid.

They added people can safely apply those products no stronger than 2 percent and twice a day. Moreover, as reported Orami Parenting, taking oral salicylic acid must be avoided during pregnancy which can increase the risk for birth defects and miscarriage.
